It has been recommended to me, so I'm giving it a try. You are ahead of me though, I haven't made up my mind on a TNC yet. I want to get a little more info. That's another advantage that Pactor has: it DOES use the ASCII code. I have finally 8mo after purchasing the 1270B installed my software and hooked up the TNC. However, I can't seem to get the software to talk to the TNC at all. I checked the baud rate settings between the computer and the TNC and the TNC is definitely set for 9600 baud (pin 5 on 1-4 off). I tried the default of 8bit/no parity and even tried 7bit even. Couldn't get the log in at all. However, at one time I did see the login message but it didn't stop for input at a CMD prompt. The curious thing is I know that the TNC is receiving from the radio and transmitting to the computer. I set the frequency to one used by packet in the area. I was able to see all the messages come across the terminal program (either multicom that I bought from MFJ or procomm). However, it was just the listing of all the messages on a bulletin board. Appx 80% was readable then there were a lot of garbage characters. Couldn't understand why I could get the receive but the TNC wouldn't take any commands (including ctrl-c) and get the cmd prompt to come on. I am using a straight modem cable from the pc to the TNC. Given the circumstances I know that pins 2 and 3 are properly wired (that is I am able to receive data so no pin swap is necessary). Anyone have any ideas? thanks, Erich ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Nov 1993 20:37:14 GMT From: news.wesleyan.edu!aalonzo.sss.wesleyan.edu!AALONZO@yale.arpa Subject: Setting up packet To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu In article <1NOV199306473938@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov> stocker@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov (ERICH FRANZ STOCKER) writes: >Subject: Setting up packet >From: stocker@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov (ERICH FRANZ STOCKER) >Date: 1 Nov 1993 06:47 EDT >I'm hoping that someone familar with MFJ-1270B might be able to help me out. Go into your communications package and type some characters. If you see the characters you typed echoed to the screen then you know that you computer is sending & recieving OK, and the problem lies elsewhere. Since you TNC is talking to you CPU, it could be the RX line driver in the TNC, or the TX line driver on your computer. At least this will give you a place to start.
