Step 1 - Right into the Eye

In the first step, I used a stock-photo picture of an eye and desaturated it. As you can see, the original image had not the right aspect ratio, so I had to artificially enlarge it on top and bottom. This was done really fast and inaccurate, but since I already knew that the final image would be radically altered, I forgot about it.. (Layers visible: 1)

Step 2 - Adding some Color -- and first Action

I wanted the image to be fast pacing, light and shadow bursting into speed. So I added some blue color to accentuate the eye and applied filters to create the visual effect of a fast moving towards the eye. Some elements here were taken from the previous Knoppix wallpaper. (Layers visible: 4)

Step 3 - The Dark Side

Next, I felt, that the overall image was getting too light. So I added some darkening layers that not only give the image more contrast, but also boosted the deep blue duotone effect. (Layers visible: 6)

Step 4 - Down the Drain

To accentuate the look of a fast movement, I added a "tunnel vision" element that boosts the effect of a drain like movement. It also draws more attention to the pupil. (Layers visible: 7)

Step 5 - The Third Dimension

Next, I added some 3D elements that were previously rendered in Blender (one of the best 3D packages around -- and free ;). The elements were pushed thru the "motion blur" filter to achieve the fast moving effect that looks like the 3D element is sucked into the eye. (Layers visible: 9)

Step 6 - Vector Rising

Now it's time for the center of attraction. I designed a geometrical centerpiece in a vector program and imported it into the artwork. This element was later used for the cd packaging and some other promotional material, like the poster. It also appears in the boot screen. As you see, it is slightly transparent with a color gradient applied to it. The lines (which always begin with a 9 pixel dot) added some complexity to the artwork. (Layers visible: 11)

Step 7 - The Grid

To add more complexity, I added a grid that ist barely visible. A common grid put together in a vector program was distorted to give it the "wavy" effect. I like grids ;) (Layers visible: 13)

Step 8 - Smearing Knoppix

Now I painted a rough "Knoppix" writing using a graphics tablet (I always work with a graphics tablet, because you simply can position the cursor more precise and naturally). The writing was filtered several times thru the gaussian blur filter. In the finished image, it will not be recognizable as writing. (Layers visible: 14)

Step 9 - Rays of Light

Next, I added some rays that will be the background for the reddish Knoppix writing. A simple trick to achieve such effects: get your mouse and put some white dots in a vertical line. Then use a motion blur, set to maximum and horizontal blur to get this effect. (Though in this case I added some hand made lines to get a technical look, Layers visible: 16)

Step 10 - The Written Word

It's almost finished. Now I added some text to the image. It gives it a nice technical look like you're looking at a computer viewscreen in a futuristic space ship. I always use pixel fonts for this, because they look more sharp and technical. The drawback is, that I have to re-apply the writings for each new resolution, because the pixel fonts break when scaling. (Layers visible: 23)

Step 11 - Finally: A Touch of Red

With the Knoppix writing and a deep red bubble-like effect applied to it, the wallpaper is finally ready to conquer the desktop... (Layers visible: 26)
