This text describes my own experience with playing music for an audience: Things to do and things to avoid. The text goes from the very basics: how to match your volumes, how to use the PFL and so on, to advanced things like beat mixing with mp3's and counting BPM's. This text does not deal with vinyl and turn tables. At the end of the text, I introduce two DJ-tools. The first is a verry accurate fully automnatic BPM counter for linux. The second is a player which uses this information.
