INSTALLING

IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY NOTE:

Mandrake is now built with CPU speed optimizations for Pentium-class (Pentium(tm) and compatibles, AMD K6, Cyrix M2, PIII...) so it WILL NOT RUN on older i386 and i486 based computers. However, a special version compiled for those CPUs will be available for download from our servers and on cheap CD-Roms.

BOOTING FROM THE CD-ROM

You might be able to boot directly from your CD. Select CD as first device in boot sequence in your BIOS, insert your CD in the drive and follow the installation instructions. If your BIOS does not permit to boot on the CD, you must run the installation from DOS or make your own boot floppy disks from our boot images.

LAUNCHING THE INSTALLATION FROM DOS

If you have MS-DOS installed on your computer, you can boot the installation system directly from the CD without using any diskettes.

To do this (assuming your CD is drive d:),, use the following commands:

C:\> d: D:\> cd \dosutils D:\dosutils> autoboot.bat
Note that this method will not work if run in a DOS window -- the autoboot.bat file must be executed with DOS as the only operating system. In other words, Windows cannot be running.

If your computer can't boot directly from CD-ROM (and you can't use a DOS-based autoboot), you'll have to use a boot diskette to get things started.

LAUNCHING THE INSTALLATION FROM BOOT FLOPPY-DISKS

There are two separate boot images for booting your system; you will need one to boot your system into the Mandrake installation and upgrade process. For CDROM and hard drive installs, use the boot.img file. NFS, ftp, and http installations requires the bootnet.img floppy, which is available in the images directory. In addition, installs which require a PCMCIA adapter (such as for PCMCIA CDROM or networking cards) need the pcmcia.img floppy.

The images for these disks are in the images directory. Either the rawrite program in the dosutils directory or 'dd' under any Unix like system can be used to transfer the image to physical floppies. Once the diskettes have been made, insert the boot disk and boot your machine.

How to create boot disks:
------------------------

  • LINUX:
Assuming you have already mounted the CD-ROM and are in the root directory of the CD. This also assumes that you have a floppy drive at /dev/fd0 (A: under DOS). You may want to read the man page for dd(1).

    cd images
    dd < boot.img > /dev/fd0
    dd < bootnet.img > /dev/fd0

  • DOS:
Assuming your CD-ROM drive is located at D: and your 3.5 in. floppy drive is located at A: follow the instructions below. Please read the rawrite3.doc file in the dosutils directory.

    D:\>cd DOSUTILS
    D:\DOSUTILS>rawrite
Enter the disk image source filename: d:\images\boot.img
    Enter target diskette drive: a:\
Please insert a formatted diskette into drive A: and press -ENTER- :

    D:\DOSUTILS>rawrite
Enter the disk image source filename: d:\images\bootnet.img
    Enter target diskette drive: a:\
Please insert a formatted diskette into drive A: and press -ENTER- :
