AL research in Japan is summarized based on a workshop held at the Advanced Telecommunications Research Labs (which is in the Kansai region of Japan), and was organized by the Japan A-Life Research Network, Japan (ALIREN), the ATR Labs, and SIG-PPAI (Special Interest Group on Parallel Processing for Artificial Intelligence). The work is fascinating, and tantalizing breakthroughs are mentioned. While many early ideas are from the West, research in Japan is at an international level and may develop in an original Japanese AL direction.
