Helpful instructions for installing JWP

OVERVIEW

JWP is a freeware Japanese word processor for Windows(TM) developed by Stephen Chung. It is released under the terms of the General Public License (GNU) and is offered free of charge with no warranty or guarantee.

If you are reading this file, then you probably got if from the University of Washington Technical Japanese Program file server (ftp.uwtc.washington.edu). There are two groups of JWP files resident on this server. The first group of files is used for new installations of JWP version 1.1. The second group of files is used for upgrading JWP from version 1.01 to version 1.1.

You will need approximately 12 Megabytes of hard disk space on the IBM compatible microcomputer on which you plan to use JWP.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Summary of Installation

A typical installation or upgrade requires these steps to complete:

- Downloading necessary files to destination PC
- Unzipping files on destination PC using PKUZIP
- Moving DLL files to Windows System directory
- Creating a JWP.INI file

This file assumes that you are familiar with FTP commands. If that is not the case, you might want to look at some of the helpful FTP instructional files in /pub/Docs.

The JWP files are stored in the ZIP format, which compresses the files so they use less disk space. The freeware application PKUZIP is the recommended software for unzipping these files. If you do not have a copy of PKUZIP, you can get it from this server. See Section III below, "Obtaining PKUNZIP for the IBM PC".

The following files should be downloaded from the UWTC server:

For New Installations:

	File				Size

	jwpedict.zip		(1157818)
	jwpfonts.zip		(0478934)
	jwpkinfo1.1.zip	(0219453)
	newjwp.zip		(0157514)
	jwpsrc.zip		(0202126)
	jwpwnn.zip		(0251083)
	jwpk48x48.zip		(0818140)
	jwpprog.1.1.zip	(0340045)

For Upgrades 1.01-> 1.1

	File				Size

	upgrade.zip		(0532653)

============================================================
WARNING: When downloading files to a DOS system, the filenames will be truncated to the first eight letters. For example:

	jwpkinfo1.1.zip   ----->  jwpkinfo.zip

WARNING: Remember to set the transfer to BINARY type before downloading! (type "binary" at the ftp prompt).
============================================================

There are three other files in the directory which may be of interest. These are:

	jwp-README	- Introduction of JWP by Stephen Chung
	readme.txt	- General installation instructions
	upgrade.doc	- General upgrade instructions

These files may contain some additional information. We have tried to make this file sufficient for any installation, though. If you find problems that you feel are not addressed, please send e-mail to "jonwd@u.washington.edu".

+ Section I: New Installation of JWP +
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Follow the steps outlined below to install JWP for the first time. If your FTP session is initiated from the microcomputer on which JWP will reside, you can ignore references to floppy disks and simply FTP the JWP files directly to your hard drive. Make sure you have at least 12 Megabytes of hard disk space.

Begin:

1.	Create a new directory on your microcomputer for JWP files.

		Example:	MD \JWP  <Return>

2.	Open an FTP session to ftp.uwtc.washington.edu. Move to the directory /pub/Japanese/IBM/JWP. Set the FTP session to BINARY mode.

3.	Transfer the following files using FTP to the hard disk or floppy disks.

	File	Size

	jwpedict.zip	(1157818)
	jwpfonts.zip	(0478934)
	jwpkinfo1.1.zip	(0219453)
	jwpsrc.zip	(0202126)
	jwpwnn.zip	(0251083)
	jwpk48x48.zip	(0818140)
	jwpprog.1.1.zip	(0340045)
	newjwp.zip	(0157514)

4:	If you transferred to floppies, copy the '*.ZIP' files from the floppy disks into the new JWP sub-directory created in step 1.

5.	For proper installation you must unzip the files in the EXACT ORDER shown in step 3, as duplicate files will overwrite older versions.

		Example: PKUZIP jwpedict

	When you unzip Ònewjwp.zipÓ, you will be prompted to replace, rename, delete the Òjwp.exeÓ file or cancel the operation.

		Enter Y to replace the file.

	Once you have completed this step, all of the files necessary to run JWP will be in the JWP directory.

5.	If you already have the file called CTL3D.DLL in your Windows System directory, compare the date of this file to CTL3D.DLL in the JWP directory. You will need to use the most recent file. Copy the file CTL3D.DLL to your Windows System directory if need be.

		Example: COPY CTL3D.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM  <Return>

6.	From the JWP directory type:

		MAKEINI  <Return>

	This will create a default initialization file called JWP.INI, using the name of the current directory.

	You will be asked to type in the name of the Windows directory. MAKEINI will create the initialization file in your Windows directory.

7.	Start the Windows Operation System.

8.	Select the window to install the JWP icon into.

9.	Select File-> New

10.	Find the JWP.EXE file in the JWP directory and select OK.

You can now run JWP by double-clicking on the JWP icon after starting Windows.

Instruction manuals are available for the JWP application. Both of these files should be located in the JWP directory after completing the installation.

Section II Upgrading JWP from Version 1.01 to 1.1

Follow the steps outlined below to upgrade an existing JWP application from version 1.01 to 1.1 If your FTP session is initiated from the micro-computer on which FTP will reside, you can ignore references to floppy disks and simply FTP the JWP files directly to your hard drive. Make sure you have at least 12 Megabytes of hard disk space.

Before continuing with this upgrade, we recommend that you make a backup copy of the All JWP files and the following files:

	C:\Windows\System\CTL3D.DLL
	C:\Windows\JWP.INI

Begin:

1.	Set the FTP session to BINARY mode. At the uesama prompt type:

		BINARY <return>

2.	Transfer the following files using FTP to hard disk or floppy disks.

		UPGRADE.ZIP

3.	Copy the file UPGRADE.ZIP into the directory containing the JWP version 1.01 files if need be.

2.	Unzip the file.

		Example: PKUZIP UPGRADE.ZIP

	When you unzip this file you will be prompted to replace, rename, delete files or cancel the operation.

		Enter Y at each prompt to replace all files.

	Once you have completed this step, all of the files necessary to run JWP will be in the JWP directory.

3.	You should already have the file called CTL3D.DLL in your Windows System directory. Compare the date of this file to CTL3D.DLL in the JWP directory. You will need to use the most recent file. Copy the file CTL3D.DLL to your Windows System directory if need be.

4.	From the JWP directory type:

			MAKEINI.EXE <return>

	This will create a default initialization file called JWP.INI, using the name of the current directory.

	You will be asked to type in the name of the Windows directory. MAKEINI will create the initialization file in your Windows directory.

7.	Start the Windows Operating System.
