************************************************************************ DDN MGT Bulletin 99 DISA DDN Defense Communications System 12 June 1992 Published by: DDN Network Info Center (NIC@NIC.DDN.MIL) (800) 365-3642 DEFENSE DATA NETWORK MANAGEMENT BULLETIN The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed on-line by the DDN Network Information Center under DISA contract as a means of communicating official policy, procedures and other information of concern to management personnel at DDN facilities. Back issues may be read through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.112.36.5] using login="anonymous" and password="guest". This message provides important guidance and status information concerning communication between MILNET and the non-DoD Internet (e.g. NSFNET.) The following topics will be addressed: -The deployment of the new architecture between MILNET and NSFNET via the Internet Protocol routers (IPRs) on the DISN-NT Pilot Network. -Status of the Cisco IPRs as default gateways providing store-and-forward functionality for MILNET/NSFNET traffic. -Status of Mailbridges as route servers for MILNET subscriber gateways. 2. In an effort to provide more efficient and economical service to subscribers exchanging traffic between MILNET and NSFNET, a new routing architecture has been designed to interconnect MILNET and NSFNET via the Internet Protocol routers (IPRs) on the DISN-NT Pilot Network. In this architecture, 8 Cisco IPRs on the T1-backbone Pilot Network, together with the Cisco at FIX-West, will provide the store-and-forward functionality for traffic between MILNET and the rest of the Internet. The Mailbridges will continue to function as route servers for MILNET subscriber gateways, provide routing information via the External Gateway Protocol (EGP). Incoming traffic to the MILNET will be diverted to the IPR closest to the destination network. Outgoing traffic to NSFNET will be routed in two ways: - -MILNET hosts will statically default to the IPR closest to them, and - -MILNET gateways will obtain a dynamic default for NSFNET traffic via EGP updates from the Mailbridges. The default IPR will be advertized as the next hop to both the default NSFNET backbone network, 129.140.0.0 and to network 0.0.0.0 . Two assignment lists are given in this bulletin to provide MILNET users with the proper IPRs to use for defaults. One list (section 5) contains a primary and a secondary IPR for each PSN. This is to be used by MILNET hosts that need static default information. The other list (section 6) contains, for each PSN, the primary and secondary Mailbridges to use as EGP peers. This is for MILNET subscriber gateways which will obtain the default IPR dynamically from the Mailbridges via EGP updates. This routing architecture is planned to take effect on June 22, 1992. 3. In addition to the Ciscos at FIX-West and Ft. Detrick, the Cisco IPRs on the Pilot Network will be default gateways providing store-and-forward functionality for MILNET users. MILNET hosts that configure a static default gateway should follow the assignment list given in section 6. MILNET gateways will obtain the proper default IPR via EGP updates with the mailbridges. The IP address of the Cisco IPRs on the Pilot Network are: Detrick 26.29.0.54 Reston 26.29.0.104 Belvoir 26.29.0.142 Lewis 26.29.0.159 Huachuca 26.25.0.122 Gunter 26.24.0.13 Randolph 26.17.0.51 Oakland 26.29.0.207 Ames 26.19.0.26 Please note that the Cisco at FIX-West (Ames) is not yet connected to the Pilot Network via a T1 link. 4. DISA plans to deploy Mailbridge patch 18 on June 22, 1992 to accompany the deployment of the FIX-East architecture. In this patch, all Mailbridges will provide routing information about MILNET networks, one NSFNET backbone network, 129.140.0.0, and network 0.0.0.0 in their EGP updates. The Mailbridges will be configured with a list of IPRs to use as default gateways for traffic destined for NSFNET. The default IPR will be advertised as the next hop to BOTH network 129.140.0.0, the NSFNET backbone network, and to network 0.0.0.0. The list of default IPRs configured for each Mailbridge is as follows: MB 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 - -- - - - - - - - - - BMILAMES AMES OAK LEWI HUAC DETR RAND BELV GUNT DCEC (26.20.0.16) BMILRAN RAND DETR LEWI AMES HUAC BELV OAK DCEC GUNT (26.1.0.51) BMILANDR GUNT RAND DETR AMES BELV LEWI HUAC DCEC OAK (26.1.0.67) BMILISI HUAC AMES OAK DETR LEWI RAND BELV GUNT DCEC (26.6.0.103) BMILDCEC DCEC BELV DETR AMES GUNT HUAC RAND LEWI OAK (26.21.0.104) BMILOAK OAK LEWI HUAC AMES DETR RAND BELV GUNT DCEC (26.1.0.148) BMILRICH BELV GUNT DETR AMES DCEC HUAC RAND LEWI OAK (26.3.0.246) The Mailbridges will always advertise the first configured default gateway if it is reachable. If not, the second configured default gateway will be choosen, and so on. In order to provide MILNET subscriber gateways with more reliable routing information, the status of the Mailbridges as MILNET core route servers is constantly under review. It is likely that the core system, currently consisted of Mailbridges only, will be upgraded in the near future. Status updates and required modifications to subscriber gateways will be published as the plan matures." 5. Static Default Assignment This assignment provides MILNET users with a primary and a secondary IPR to use as static defaults for outbound traffic from MILNET to NSFNET. All hosts and gateways which cannot take advantages of dynamic routing should used the appropriate IPRs as their default gateways so that traffic within MILNET will be minimized. EGP Server Assignment This assignment provides the MILNET gateways with the Mailbridges to use as primary and secondary EGP peers. This assignment ensures that outbound traffic from MILNET to NSFNET will be routed to the IPR closest to the gateway so that traffic within MILNET will be minimized. In order for outbound traffic to be routed optimally, it is ESSENTIAL for MILNET gateways to comply with the assignments in this list. As before, the list is based on MILNET PSNs.
