HOW TO USE FILES
HOW TO USE FILES

Image files are what most folks are after on newsgroups, they can be in .gif, .jpg, .bmp, .tif and many other formats.

To see these files you need a graphic viewer program:

LviewPro

In 16 and 32 bit versions, this is a great program, it will make index (catalogue) sheets, slideshows, convert from one to another format.

Vuepro

In 16 and 32 bit versions, this is a great program, it will make index (catalogue) sheets, slideshows, convert from one to another format. This will also view mime, base64 and .uue encoded picture files, it will also place any image as your wallpaper.

ACDsee

Also in 16 and 32 bit version, this is mainly an image viewer, it does not allow cropping or resizing of images. It is most useful as a tool to quickly view and copy or move files around. Very fast and efficient

Paint Shop Pro

Also in 16 and 32 bit versions, this is a full featured image manipulation program almost at the level of Adobe Photoshop, much cheaper though. Will do near anything you could want in an image viewer.

Compressed files

These will be in one of three formats:

.zip The most common format, use a program like:

Winzip

In 16 and 32 bit versions, fast easy to use zip file handler. The overall easiest to use.

PKzip

The oldest and most efficient zipper out there. In 16 and 32 bit versions. Has a new windows interface, smooth and fast, a bit tougher to learn than Winzip, but more powerful, and can fix some corrupt zip files.

.arj A format all on it's own, been around a long time, you will see this mainly in binary groups pertaining to programs.

Winarj

Really the only program around for these files, will handle all the arj formats, such as:
arj
a01
001

Rar format is another good compression format, not used often, very solid and fairly simple to use.

WinRAR About the only program out there that can handle these files, fast and extremely efficient You will mainly see these in large binary program groups.
