DATA FILES The data files provided are examples of antennas and structures, most in .NEC format for input to the NEC2 programs. They provide examples of many common antennas, some complex ones plus simple and complex structures. The outputs give much information on the performance of the antenna or structure. (the associated .OUT file is included for some examples, but must be generated by a NEC run for the others). The examples can be modified in several ways. For example, the frequency of the FR card can be changed with a text editor. So can the dimensions on a GM card. Additional lines (cards) can be inserted into the file, for such purposes as duplicating an element or structure, creating an array of antennas, introducing or changing ground conditions, etc. New examples can be prepared with NCARDS, or with a text editor. The last is useful for simple problems, but with little experience, NCARDS is better for a problem of any complexity. File nomenclature will become a problem when many design variations are needed, or when there is a large number of files. A suggested naming is: No. elements+type+band+designator.NEC. For example, 6Y20SB.NEC would be a 6 element 20 meter Yagi, with a Somnec ground type B. As in the CALIBRATE section, other input formats are included for some designs.
